Service Description

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to alleviate both primary and secondary symptoms of vestibular disorders through the use of gaze, positional shifts and gait re-education to improve balance and reduce problems related to dizziness. Dizziness can be described as: 1. Feelings of unsteadiness 2. Wooziness (swimming feeling in head) 3. Lightheadedness 4. Feelings of passing out 5. Sensations of moving 6. Spinning 7. Floating 8. Swaying 9. Tilting 10. Whirling (sensations known as vertigo) What are vestibular disorders? Vestibular disorders are a disturbance of the body's balance system. It often presents as dizziness and is a common complaint in persons 40 years and older, mostly females or those who suffer with chronic ear infections. Who can benefit? Patients referred for vestibular rehabilitation therapy are those diagnosed with dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, nystagmus, tinnitus, Meniere’s syndrome, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Vestibular Hypofunction, neck-related dizziness and migraines. Other candidates are patients who have had a stroke or brain injury or who frequently fall. How is it treated? Plan of care is based on the results of your assessment which can include. Balance and/or leg strength/flexibility Gait (how you walk) Visual stability and mobility Neck mobility and neck and arm strength Positional testing
